Lesson in the 5th form

Topic of the lesson: Hobbies and Pastimes

 

Objectives: to develop students’ speaking skills, to determine the students’ knowledge of grammar and lexical structures on the theme “Hobby”; to develop logical thinking of the pupils; to broaden the pupils’ knowledge on the subject; to foster the pupils’ interest in learning English.

The procedure of the lesson

 

  1. Greeting and the Aim

 

T: Good morning children. Nice to meet you!

Ps: Good morning teacher! Nice to meet you too!

T: Today we have a special lesson and also there are many guests at our lesson. So, let’s greet them all together!

Ps: Good morning! Nice to meet you!

T: Sit down, please. Tell me, how are you today?

Ps: I’m fine/ good/ fantastic/ wonderful/ great/ OK today.

T: I‘m glad to hear that because today we are going to speak about your hobbies. During the lesson we’ll do some exercises, will use new words and find out the most popular kinds of hobbies in our class. So, the topic of our lesson is “Hobbies and pastimes”. As usual, you’ll get the stickers for your right answers. I hope you’ll be very active today.

 

  1. Warming- up

 

T: Let’s start our lesson with a song to raise your mood, a rap –song “Days of the Week”

T:  Tell me: why is Saturday the best day of the week for you?

P1: I can play computer games and watch cartoons on Saturday.

P2: I don’t do my home task on Saturday and can play football with my friends.

P3: I don’t go to school on Saturday and I can ride a bike.

P4: I can read my favourite books and magazines on Saturday.

P5: I watch my favourite programme on TV.

T: Thank you for your answers. It was very interesting indeed!

 

 

  1. The main part of the lesson

 

  • Vocabulary revision

 

T: Let’s make a world map with the words of the topic hobby. It will be our semi coloured flower. So, what kinds of hobby do you know. Take one coloured leaf and write some of them. Then we’ll stick them on the blackboard.

  • Reading

 

T: And now we’ll find out what are the popular hobbies among the British schoolchildren. So, let’s read the text. After that you’ll answer my questions.

( text ex.3, p.75 -  on slides)

Sue:

    I often listen to pop music and I watch TV a lot. I love films, but I don’t like to watch soap operas. I don’t read very much – magazines sometimes, but not books.

 

 John:

   I’ve got a lot of friends.

   They often come to my home, and we spend time together.

   I like to play active games with them.

Richard:

   I like to stay at home. Sometimes I read books or listen to music – classical music only.

    I don’t watch TV very much, but I usually watch cartoons, or sometimes films. I often study in the evening.

     Mary:

   I like to visit my friends and play computer games with them.

    I don’t like to stay at home. It’s boring.

    I also spend much time outdoors.

T: Well done, children. Now, let’s play a game “Microphone”. Ask and answer in a chain “What is your hobby? – My hobby is….”

T: As you see – different people – different tastes. And now I’d like to know what hobbies are popular in our class. That’s why we’ll make a survey in 2 groups. First you need to do is to choose a secretary, he or she will write the answers. Fill in the survey, please.

  • Checking the homework

 

T: Your hometask was to write a paragraph bout your hobby. I know that you all have interesting hobbies. Maybe some of you would like to tell us about them and show a picture you’ve prepared for today’s lesson.

 

P1: Hello, my name is Iryna. I like collecting stickers. My favourite sticker is with a Smiley on it. I also interested in drawing. I like to draw cats and dogs, because they are smart and very sweet animals. I think we should always take care of them!

P2: Hello, my name is Natalia. I’ve got lots of hobbies. But my favourite ones are riding a bike and learning English. Also I’m fond of meeting with friends and playing outdoor games.

P3: Hello, my name is Myshko. I like painting and playing football.

P4: Hello, my name is Orysia. I like reading best of all. Reading is my favourite subject at school. I like reading different stories. I think my hobby is very interesting and useful, because when I read I learn many new things and travel to different countries in these stories.

IV. Home assignment

V. Summing – up

 

T: I hope you enjoyed our lesson. Was it interesting for you to speak about hobbies? Now I know that all you have very interesting and useful hobbies. Some of you like making things, some of you learning or collecting things. And now it is the time to count your stickers and put the marks for your work during the lesson.
