English Lesson "Travelling"

Topic of the lesson: Travelling

 

Students: learners of 6th year of study in Ukrainian- speaking environment. There are 23 students in the class.

Setting: This is a public school. Students have English lessons 3 times a week.

Learning Objectives: by the end of the lesson the students are expected to be able to talk about different kinds of traveling, name its advantages and disadvantages.

The procedure of the lesson

  1. Greeting and the Aim (2 min)

T: Good morning everyone.

Well, students, let’s begin our work. Today, we’ll speak about ….   guess what is the theme of our today’s lesson. Look at this train and solve the puzzle. This train is as a code.  «TRAVELLING»

 

T: So, today we are going to talk about advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of traveling.

  1. Warming - up “ Have you ever…?”(3min)

T: Have you ever traveled by car? Stand up, please.

Have you ever traveled by bus/ train/ plane/ ship/ helicopter/…. all means of transport?

T: Do you like traveling? why?

T: OK. Thank you. And now let’s work in  groups. Choose any of these cards and form groups of four. Each group gets a crossword to find the names of the transport. For this task you have 4 minutes.

Listening T: Let’s work in pairs. Take the card and find your partner.

Listen to the short descriptions of different ways of travelling and guess each kind of travelling. I give you a table you should put the numbers of the descriptions into it.

                           DIFFERENT KINDS OF TRAVELLING

  1. It is the fastest way of travelling. It can take you from town or city to another in no time. The seats are comfortable. That’s a pity but sometimes you can see very little from the windows. The things are too small to see them. When the weather is rainy or foggy you can’t travel by it. (by plane)
  2. This way of travelling is fast. You can stop at any place you like and go where you like. You need no tickets. Usually families travel by it. (by car)
  3. This is the slowest way of travelling. Both young and old people like it. You needn’t worry about the tickets. The only thing you need is a rucksack. You can visit any places in such a way. (on foot)
  4. This way of travelling is fast. The carriages are comfortable. It is so pleasant to travel in them. You can see a lot of interesting things from carriage windows. You can make a long journey on land by it. (by train)
  5. This way of travelling is not very fast. Some people enjoy travelling by it. But others don’t like it at all. Usually people travel by it in summer when they are on holidays. You can see many interesting things standing on deck. You can see seagulls and waves. (by ship)

T: That was great !.(regrouping) Another tasks for your pair work. For this activity you have 2 minutes. I give you these sentences. The words in them have been pushed together.  Separate and write them. So, you may start.

T: Imagine a situation. You are on a TV – studio. The TV – reporter wants to know your view points about travelling. He prepared some questions for you.  Answer them, please.

 

TV – reporter: Hi! I am _________. I’m a TV – reporter of the TV – studio “1+1”. I’m glad to see you. I want to ask you some questions.

  • Do you like travelling?
  • Why do you like travelling? (Because it is interesting, exciting, wonderful).
  • What is your favorite way of travelling?  
  • How do you think? Why do people travel?

(They travel to see the world. They travel to have a rest. They travel to practice foreign languages. They travel to study geography. They travel to learn about other countries and their traditions. They travel to make new friends. They travel to see other countries and cities. )

  • Why do you travel?

(I travel for pleasure. I travel for business.)

TV reporter: Thank you very much. Good bye. Have a nice day.

T: Thank you.. There are many reasons which make people travel and there are different thoughts about travelling. Some people say travelling has only advantages. Others don’t think so positively. Each way of traveling has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s make a spider gram to see what  they are. Write one word on a paper and stick it on the board.

T: And now let’s play a game. Yes/ no corners. Listen to the statement and choose the corner- yes or no. Then explain your choice.

  1. Travelling is not popular nowadays.
  2. The fastest way of travelling is by plane.
  3. People can travel only in winter.
  4. Planes can fly when the weather is rainy.
  5. When you travel on foot you needn’t any tickets.
  6. You need no tickets when you travel by car.
  7. You can not eat, read and sleep when you travel by train.
  8. Travelling by train we can stop at any place we like.

IV Home Assignment        

Your hometask is to prepare a story about your last trip by car/ by train/ by plane or by ship.
